Summit Oatmeal Stout

Summit Brewing in St. Paul, MN produces a number of tasty brews. There sure is a dominance of big domestic beer brands in Minnesota, so it excites me to know that Minnesotans are proud of their Summit. I love my dark beers and my hoppy beers, so I tried the India Pale Ale and Oatmeal Stout.

The IPA is 6.4% ABV, a great medium color, with spicy herbal hops and a hint of caramel malt. For an IPA, it is not too hoppy at 65 bittering units. I think it’s a great “transitional” beer, for new beer lovers looking to broaden their taste palate. To balance a hoppy beer, spicy foods and marinated meats will go great with it.
Another Summit beer I tried is the Oatmeal Stout (5.1% ABV). Of course stouts are super dark in color, and often thought as heavy—that’s the opposite. This Oatmeal Stout, yes dark, but not heavy at all. Drinkable year-round. It’s made with naked oats from the UK with hints of coffee, caramel and chocolate. This stout has been rated in the top 20 of Oatmeal Stouts by member reviews at BeerAdvocate.com. It’s good, but I believe I’ll have to try a few more stouts to rate it in the top 20. Stouts pair well with pork, bleu cheese, chocolate desserts—all delicious!
Though I have not tried all, these are their regulars: Extra Pale Ale, Pilsner, IPA, Great Northern Porter and Horizon Red Ale.
